Tutorial for envelope clutch: draw, cut, sew and decorate!
– Draw a rectangle that is the size of your clutch. Replicated twice the rectangle above the one you just drew. On the top rectangle to draw the desired shape of the flap (you can leave it rectangular, in that case should be made only for a line to mark its height, or you can draw asymmetrical, with the corners rounded or triangular like a real envelope). The basic pattern is done.
– Cutting fabrics. Recommend three layers: the outer fabric, batting and lining.
As batting I used felt, it is very convenient because you can sew well the fabric and the lining with the felt using just a few pin. If you use heavy fabrics (such as denim or wool), you can also avoid the batting.
– Sew the fabrics right sides together leaving a small opening needed to turn the clutch right side out once sewn together the three layers.
Sew this opening (closed by turning inward the outer layer of the fabric).
Then you will have a rectangle of fabric, that folded will shape your clutch. Now just sew the two sides of the bag with a decorative stitch in contrast with the fabric.
I used to close some metal locks that you sew, an operation that can be done even at the end of the work. Just be careful to only sew on a layer of cloth, without invading the main fabric.
To decorate the front of the clutch I used wire braided red and white to make fringe (style trimmings for curtains, I do not know the technical term) or a bow made with the remaining fabric.
